The Lower East Side/Lower Manhattan Interagency Council for the Aging (LES/LM IAC) was formed in 1972. We are a multi-issue, multi-ethnic collation of service providers and individuals with a geriatric focus. We range in size from small volunteer groups to large multi-service centers and hospitals. The member agencies of the Lower East Side/Lower Manhattan Interagency Council for Aging address issues affecting the elderly, such as housing, nutrition, health, home care, entitlements, and transportation. We are a constituent member of the Manhattan BoroughWide Interagency Council for the Aging (MBIAC).
During its early years, LES/LM IAC was the catalyst that led to the creation of two special programs that have been replicated citywide:
EARS (Emergency Alarm Response System): a program used by homebound elderly linking them to emergency response centers via a button device worn in their homes
EASYRIDE: a Para transit program for the elderly and disabled now operating citywide as ACCESS-A-RIDE
