MHIAC is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, governed by a board of directors under bylaws approved by the State of New York. It is funded by the NYC Department of Aging through a grant from the Office of the Manhattan Borough President, and by member donations. Board members, elected annually, contribute their time and talents to sustain the IAC's mission and implement its goals. Murray Hill is represented on the board of Manhattan Borough-Wide Interagency Council on Aging.
"IAC" is short for "Interagency Council on Aging." The Council brings together groups and individuals in an area who are concerned with the needs, issues, and concerns of older adults in that community. There are eight IACs in Manhattan. The Murray Hill IAC serves seniors living in CB #5 and CB #6.
The IAC is an affiliative / collaborative group that promotes education, networking, and advocacy in behalf of its senior community. In the monthly IAC meeting, we learn more about issues affecting seniors and about programs for seniors. We share information about our agencies that can facilitate appropriate referrals and encourage greater use of our programs. And we may advocate in behalf of the elderly where existing programs and services fall short of present needs.
We invite the active participation of all agencies, community institutions, and government offices providing programs or services for seniors in our area. We have a member directory. |
