WHICOA has been the inter-agency planning and advocacy organization for aging services providers and related organizations in Northern Manhattan for over 32 years. The Council is composed of over 50 local community-based organizations and service providers. The membership includes dedicated community leaders, senior consumers representing social services and health care organizations, universities, private businesses, the nine Northern Manhattan senior centers. Included in these groups are Isabella, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH), the Visiting Nurse Service (VNS), and the local Community Board 12.
The Washington Heights & Inwood Council on Aging (WHICOA) was founded in 1972 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1986. WHICOA is an umbrella organization serving the community by advocating on behalf of the elderly and initiating, expanding and coordinating services for them.
WHICOA possesses the tradition and commitment to develop program solutions, which support the attainment of a true continuum of services for the elderly of Northern Manhattan. The strength of the coalition lies in its years of continuity and the close working relationships among its members.
WHICOA has 9 open general membership meeting per year. The WHICOA Executive Committee, Senior Center Directors, Case Managers and other committees meet monthly. The group has an outstanding history of advocating for changes in public policy at the city, state and federal level.
