The eight interagency councils cover the entire Borough of Manhattan. Each of the member councils is an independent, not-for-profit organization. They represent a diverse coalition of consumers, providers and advocates that deliver and oversee services to elderly New Yorkers in their communities.
MBIAC has three major components that define its domain of service and sphere of influence: Education, Advocacy and Empowerment.
Education: MBIAC provides frequent public forums and meetings which address senior related issues. These have included Health Care and Prevention, Social Security, Medicare, HMOs, Assisted Living, Nursing Home Reform and Transportation Issues (i.e. Reduced Fare and Access-A-Ride Options for seniors). We enlist knowledgeable speakers who present comprehensive talks on these topics.
Empowerment: MBIAC, in conjunction with its eight member interagency councils, updates its members on new and developing policy initiatives and provides guidance for taking action steps. Manhattan Borough Wide partners with older citizens themselves as well as other senior advocacy organizations.
Advocacy: We prepare and present public testimony and disseminate Calls to Action on issues crucial to seniors. We participate in rallies and, along with other groups, organize seniors to petition City Council Members and various elected officials for legislative and budget changes.
We will continue to be a vocal presence for our aging population at the City, State and Federal levels. We will continue to encourage grass roots initiatives for elders as well as create linkages with other action groups. We will continue to energize an awareness, not only for our needs as we grow older, but also for our seniors’ ongoing contributions to this society.
