Donnell Branch of the NY Public Library slated for destruction
The Donnell Branch of the NY Public Library (53rd St. between 5th and 6th Avenues) has been a haven for many, many seniors seven days a week. It has offered comfortable space for reading, research and attending an array of free concerts, discussions and films. Seniors have had place to meet and benefit from ongoing education.
Recently it has been announced that the Donnell building has been sold to a hotel chain which will build a high rise hotel connecting to the upscale “21 Club” on 52nd St. Although a replacement library will be housed in the hotel, it will admittedly be smaller than the present Donnell
This means cuts in services and programs in that location - while the NYPL makes a profit of $59 million.--Something is not right here!
The NYPL is supposedly a not profit organization for service to the public.
A service so well utilized by our seniors is being diminished - Given the great profit for the library why wasn’t library space expanded instead?
On behalf of our seniors please contact the NYPL urging that plans be renegotiated to protect (or expand) the present Donnell space.
